What Happened in Japan?

A series of major earthquakes struck off the coast of Japan at around 2:46 pm JST on March 11. One of the earthquakes measured 8.9 in magnitude.

The Japanese government on Friday declared a nuclear emergency at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station after the reactor's cooling system failed. The government ordered thousands of people living within 6 miles of the plant to evacuate. Early Saturday, it declared a nuclear emergency at a second power plant where a cooling system had also failed.

For more than two terrifying, seemingly endless minutes, the most powerful earthquake ever recorded by modern means shook apart homes and buildings. Then came the devastating tsunami that tore apart northeastern Japan killing hundreds and leaving people without basic means of support or shelter.

The death toll rose steadily throughout the day, but the true extent of the disaster could not be assessed as airports and roads are closed. After dawn Saturday, the scale of the destruction became clearer.

People were seeking refuge on roofs of partially submerged buildings. At a school, a large sign spelled out "SOS" in English.
